Unleashing the Thrill: A Beginner's Guide to Northern Power Race Park Ditchbangers

Calling all snowmobilers!! Winter will arrive in Northern Michigan soon, and that means it’s time for snowmobiling enthusiasts to gear up for some exhilarating racing fun at the Northern Power Race Park Ditchbangers! Whether stepping into the exciting world of Ditchbangers for the first time or looking to sharpen your skills, this guide has everything you need. Let’s dive into the essentials to help you master the art of Ditchbanging at Northern Power Race Park.


Step 1: What do you need to race?


  1. A snowmobile! We have a class for almost every type of trail sled. 

  2. Safety gear: A helmet, eye protection, gloves, boots, chest protection, shin/knee guards, and a tether are required to race. 

  3. Numbers on your sled: Every sled is required to have a number that is clearly visible. These should be placed in at least two locations on the right side of the sled. 

  4. A good spirit! These events are designed to be fun and allow racers of all skill levels to try their hand at snowmobile racing. 


Step 2: Understanding Ditchbanger Classes


Before you venture out to the races, it's crucial to know the different classes that we offer and the sleds that are permitted. There are 14 classes offered at the NPRP Ditchbangers they are broken down by skill level, age, sled year or sled type. 


General Classes Based on Skill Level, Gender and Age: 

Classes in this category: Beginner, Amateur, Pro, Women, 35+, and 50+. 

Sleds permitted in these classes: All sleds need to be manufactured in 2003 or before. For a full breakdown of machine requirements, please refer to page 4 of the NPRP Ditchbangers Rulebook. 

Age requirement: Riders must be 14 or older. 


Specialty Classes Based on Sled Type: 

Classes in this category: Mod, Vintage Snocross, Greasy Triple, Two Up, 2004 - 2010, High Dollar Trail. 

Class specifications: 

  • Mod: Open sleds manufactured in 2003 or before. 

  • Vintage Snocross: Snocross sleds manufactured in 2014 or before. 

  • Greasy Triple: Triple-cylinder sleds manufactured in 2003 or before. 

  • Two Up: A fun class! Sleds must be a true two-person sled (or have an added second seat made for the sled). Two drivers will be on each sled and will switch positions halfway through the race. 

  • 2004 - 2010: Stock sleds manufactured between 2004 and 2010. 

  • High Dollar Trail: Trail sleds manufactured from 2011 to the present.

Age requirement: Riders must be 14 or older. 


Youth Classes 

Classes in this Category: 120cc and 200cc.

Age requirements: 6 - 13 years old. 



Step 3: Understanding the Northern power race park Ditchbanger Rules & Prioritizing Safety


Please read through the Official NPRP Ditchbangers Rulebook. You will find information on the general regulations, enforcement and violations, and flag definitions. 


When it comes to snowmobile racing, safety should always be at the forefront of your mind. Understanding the risks involved with racing is crucial for beginners. Always wear proper safety gear, including a helmet, chest protector, gloves, and supportive boots. Before hitting the track, take time to learn the signals used during races.

Step 4: Registration Process


Once you're familiar with the basics of NPRP Ditchbangers and have selected your sled and class, it’s time to register. The registration process is simple and can be completed either online or at the venue.


Online Registration: We highly recommend that you register online before the event. This ensures that all your information is correct and improves your race day experience. Online registration closes at midnight the day before the event. 


In-person Registration: If you choose to register at the park, there will be an in-person registration fee added to your registration. In-person registration is offered up to one hour before the event starts.


Step 5: Get Ready to Race


The Northern Power Race Park Ditchbangers are an exhilarating way to enjoy winter in Northern Michigan. As a beginner, mastering the fundamentals of sled handling, registering properly, and prioritizing safety will ensure you have a memorable experience at the races.

January 17, 2025: Ditchbanger 2

February 15 - 16, 2025: Ditchbanger 3 & 4

February 28, 2025: Ditchbanger 5
